5 Things Your Dad Never Taught You About Shaving

Shaving used to be a right of passage. When sons entered into puberty, their fathers bought them razors and taught them the art of shaving. But it’s becoming less of a tradition. More young men are being forced to figure out the world of male grooming on their own. And if they are given advice, it’s typically dated and incorrect. So we’re here to set the record straight.

5 Grooming Tips for the Modern Man

As a 21st century man, you shouldn’t be subjected to 20th century grooming habits, misgivings, and mistakes. You have access to the right information and the right grooming products. Let’s debunk some common myths and teach you a few things about how to groom like a real man.

  1.     Multi-Blade Razors Suck

Somewhere along the line, razor manufacturers came up with this idea that more blades are better in a shaving razor. In the process, they’ve invested millions of dollars into marketing, advertising, and education that’s, unfortunately, flat wrong. Multi-blade razors are harsh on the skin, frequently cut the hair beneath the skin, and lead to an increased risk of ingrown hairs and red razor bumps. Because most men have only used multi-blade razors, they assume that this is just the way shaving works. Well…it’s not.

Major men’s care brands don’t want you to know this secret, but safety razors are the answer. They come in both single and double edge varieties and allow for greater control, a cleaner cut, and less irritation. They’re also far cheaper to use over time. It’s a win-win situation.

  1.     Nix Aftershave With Alcohol as a Primary Ingredient

Even if you shave with a safety razor, it’s smart to use aftershave to keep your skin healthy and comfortable. But before slapping on the same old balm or splash you’ve always used, read the ingredient label and be more selective.

Not all moisturizers are the same. Sure, they smell different – but they also contain different ingredients. Some of these ingredients should be avoided. These include high concentrations of alcohol, camphor, parabens, lemon oil, and eucalyptus (for those with sensitive skin). The key words here are “high concentrations.” Some alcohol is necessary for antiseptic properties, but too much will dry you out. Let’s just say it shouldn’t be a primary ingredient.

  1.     Manscaping is Hygienic

It’s not something you want to think about, but can we be honest about something? Your dad has probably never manscaped a day in his life. So the fact that your dad never shared dished out wisdom on the topic is irrelevant. You need to do it, if for no other reason than it’s hygienic.

More men than ever are now manscaping. It’s good for the skin, reduces sweating, and leads to far greater comfort and better sex. While it’s definitely a culture shift from 15 or 20 years ago, it’s an important step in a healthy direction.

  1.     There’s Nothing Feminine About Moisturizer

Most men have grown up assuming that skin moisturizers are for women. And while most users are women, men have a need for it too.

“A good moisturizer helps retain the moisture that’s already in your skin,” writes Dr. Neal Shultz, a board-certified dermatologist. “It also helps to replenish the moisture you lose on a daily basis, whether that’s from showering and washing your body or from cold winter air.”

You don’t have to go around smelling like a bottle of perfume, either. There are plenty of unscented moisturizers on the market. Find one you like and use it daily.

  1.     You Don’t Need Shampoo Every Day

Shampoo serves a purpose, but it’s not designed to be used everyday. If you shampoo every single day, you’ll strip your scalp of all the natural oils and nutrients it needs to promote healthy hair – leaving you with brittle, fraying hair. Try shampooing every other day (or even less). When you do shampoo, be sure to use a conditioner to replenish the scalp.

Develop a Consistent Routine

When it comes to grooming, men need to have consistent routines just like their female counterparts. While we live in a culture where men aren’t taught the basics of grooming – let alone the more intricate details that are necessary to cultivate healthy hair and skin – this is no excuse to ignore your personal health and hygiene. Let these five grooming tips serve as motivation to go out and learn more. You’ll be surprised how much there is to discover.
