The LEGO Group and McLaren Automotive have unveiled their latest collaboration: the LEGO® Technic™ McLaren P1™, a stunning replica of one of the world’s most dynamically accomplished hypercars.
As part of the LEGO Technic Ultimate Car Concept Series, this set is scaled at 1:8, mirroring its drivable counterpart, and includes authentic features that promise an immersive building experience. The design teams from LEGO Technic and McLaren Automotive worked closely to integrate cutting-edge functionality, bringing elements of the original P1 to life in LEGO form.
The new set, priced at $589.99, consists of 3,893 pieces and measures over 5.5 inches (14 cm) high, 23 inches (59 cm) long, and 9.5 inches (25 cm) wide. It will be available from August 1, 2024, exclusively at LEGO.ca/McLaren and LEGO stores.
The McLaren P1™ redefined high-performance automotive engineering, recognized as the most exciting, capable, and technologically advanced supercar of its time. Leveraging McLaren’s advanced motorsport-based engineering, it showcased groundbreaking advances in weight reduction, packaging, high-speed performance, powertrain, and aerodynamics. Designed to be ‘the best driver’s car in the world on both road and track,’ the P1™ stands as a landmark in the development of high-performance hybrid vehicles.
Replicating this engineering marvel in 1:8 scale was a perfect challenge for the LEGO Technic team. The LEGO Technic McLaren P1™ set features a unique serial number that unlocks special behind-the-scenes content. Key functions include a 7-speed gearbox with 2 shifter drums, suspension, a V8 piston engine, an adjustable rear wing, and opening dihedral doors with an advanced mechanism. These details ensure an immersive building experience that is true to the real McLaren P1™.
The collaboration between the LEGO Technic design team and McLaren Automotive aimed to capture as much cutting-edge functionality as possible. “It’s amazing to see so many of the elements from the original P1™ brought to life by the LEGO team for the LEGO Technic McLaren P1™. Kasper Rene Hansen, Designer at LEGO Group, added, “From the exterior with aerodynamic shapes to the interior and V8 piston engine – the real McLaren P1™ is an incredible car. We wanted to capture these details in the best way possible with our LEGO Technic model and we did not want to compromise in any way. We worked on multiple variations of the car to test different designs. We also faced a huge challenge with the iconic butterfly doors because they needed a new mechanism to stay open. It was a great experience to recreate the McLaren P1™ and I’m hoping all supercar enthusiasts out there are ready to explore the details and intricacies of the real McLaren P1™ in LEGO Technic form.”
