In life, we need hobbies to teach us new skills, improve on existing ones and to help us become a more rounded person. Unfortunately, many require a certain level of funds to get started. If you’re thinking of starting your own band, for example, there’s going to be a few costs you need to be aware of before you get started.
Even if you’re just setting up a band as a hobby, the costs can soon mount up. Here, you’ll discover some of the main costs to consider when setting up a music band.
Instrument costs
The main expense you’re going to face when setting up a band, is the cost of instruments. If you can’t already play, you’re going to need to pay for lessons too. However, it’s the instruments themselves which are going to cost the most; particularly if you want high-quality instruments that will last years. Before getting whisked away in the excitement, make sure you’ve properly researched your options to make sure you can justify the cost.
Space to play
Something else you’re going to need is a space to play with the band. Most hobby musicians tend to start in their garage. However, if this isn’t an option, you may need to book somewhere whenever you want to practice. Again, this can prove to be pretty expensive. However, you may be able to save money if you look for people willing to rent out their garage space.
You can also choose to perform at local bars and venues which won’t just build up your fan base and take your hobby to a new level, but it also gives you the opportunity to make a little cash on the side from your hobby.
Recording equipment
Playing in a band is one thing, but what if you want to record the music you’re making? Recording equipment isn’t cheap, but to get started you could take advantage of smartphone apps and videos recorded on your phone. If you choose to get a little more serious with the band, you can always invest in better quality equipment later on.
As you can see, the cost of setting up a band can be pretty high. However, it depends upon whether or not you have the instruments and space to play. If you already have these things, it’s going to cost very little to get started.
