With the current pandemic forcing us to #StayHome for weeks on end, it’s the perfect time to brush up on skills or learn something new, so we can feel good coming out of quarantine with newfound talents. Online courses can give more structure to our day, help us use our time productively, and curb everyone’s new favourite pastime: opening the fridge for no reason.
There are so many online courses to make the most of quarantine life, here are our recommendations:
1. Wine: from 101 to Expert Level
The globally recognized Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) now offers online courses through Toronto’s IWEG. You can start with wine basics right up to what affects wine quality, price and style so whether you’re a boxed-wine buyer or a cabernet connoisseur, you’ll be restaurant wine list ready in no time.
2. Sign Language
Of course Rosetta Stone or Babbel are great to help you quickly learn Spanish, Danish or Italian, but why not follow in the steps of an NBA Champ and learn sign language? The Raptors’ Norman Powell is using his downtime wisely and there are lots of great online courses like this one so you can follow suit.
3. Web Development + Digital Marketing
Maybe you’ll come out of this with your new dream job in tech. BrainStation has an intensive, project-based, online learning web development program and a comprehensive digital marketing program, among others that give you practical skills, easily transferable to your side hustle or even to launch a new career.
4. Bread School
In knead of some fresh-baked bread? Head to bread school to perfect your sourdough! Run by Albertan bakery owner Laura Rogerson, Breadlove teaches budding bakers insider tips on making the perfect loaf from scratch, through IGTV videos sharing simple yet delicious recipes.
5. Leadership
If Bob Iger’s book The Ride of a Lifetime has been on your quarantine reading list, consider joining the former Disney CEO’s Masterclass on Leadership which promises to teach the art of negotiation, creating brand value and much more in 13 instalments.
