Kansas City Chiefs Close In on Historic Super Bowl Three-Peat

There have been eight instances, since the Super Bowl era began in 1967, of a franchise lifting the Vince Lombardi Trophy in back-to-back years.

It’s nine, actually, if you count the current Kansas City Chiefs, who won the Big Game in 2023 and again earlier this year, too.

There have been instances of teams winning three consecutive editions of the NFL Championship before, but never in this contemporary Super Bowl era.

And so, the Chiefs are potentially on the brink of creating the kind of history that may never be repeated ever again…

Again and Again and Again

When you look at the NFL betting odds, you’ll see it right away: Kansas City are the +400 favorites to win the Super Bowl, and therefore cement their legacy as arguably the greatest football team of all time.

The Super Bowl 2025 odds are also sweet on the chances of the Detroit Lions (+650), Baltimore Ravens (+650), and the San Francisco 49ers (+750), but here’s the thing: the Chiefs have beaten the Ravens and the 49ers already this season on their way to a perfect 7-0 start.

Baltimore were downed 27-20 at the Arrowhead Stadium in the opening round of games, before Kansas headed to San Francisco in Gameweek 7 and produced the perfect road performance: Kareem Hunt, Mecole Hardman, and even that man Patrick Mahomes notching touchdowns on the way to a 28-18 triumph.

Jack of All Trades

What’s amazing about the Chiefs’ perfect start to the campaign is that, statistically at least, they are performing only slightly above the league averages.

After Gameweek 8, they ranked 11th in the NFL standings for total yards gained on offense per game, and just 9th for points scored per outing.

At the other end of the pitch, they’re the fifth-best team in terms of defensive yards given up per game, and the same ranking again for points conceded per outing.

So, as far as these broad metrics are concerned, the Chiefs have been in fairly good form so far in 2024-25.

But this is a franchise that has those intangible qualities that tend to follow champions around; the unseeable attributes that can’t be measured by data analysis. In Andy Reid, they possess a head coach that just knows how to win – his three Super Bowl triumphs with Kansas are evidence of that.

And then you have someone like Mahomes, who might not top the standings when it comes to yardages and touchdown passes, but you know will come up with the goods when it really matters; he, lest we forget, is a three-time Super Bowl MVP.

The success of this Kansas City Chiefs team is predicated more on collective quality, rather than individual performances; as opposed to a San Francisco 49ers, who have a galaxy of offensive talent.

The Chiefs are a seemingly unstoppable force nonetheless… and they might just achieve the most remarkable feat in football come February.
