Last year’s promoted teams are already feeling the harsh reality of the Premier League but with the huge investment of transfer fees and new contracts upon promotion, they’ll be hoping to see success long-term. Before the busy winter period is upon us, here’s a list of ten teams who could be in the running for promotion this season. Take a look at some previews and predictions on how the season is going to go.
Leeds United
Leeds were the play off final losers of last year, even though they sat comfortably at the top of the table for much of the season. They’re relying on younger players on loan from the Premier League this time around, but in order to make an impact and avoid the problems they faced last year, they will need to ensure they don’t lose their cutting edge in the attack.
Cardiff City
Cardiff City are expected to hold steady throughout this season. Neil Warnock is experienced at getting teams promoted and he’s already secured eight promotions over the course of his management career, so he knows what’s required. They have a solid team of players so a spot in the play-offs could well be on the cards for them.
Fulham
Last year, Fulham invested a lot financially to avoid relegation – they have a large squad of players, most of which have some Premier League experience and will be keen to get back to top flight.
Bristol City
Bristol City have shown significant progress since Lee Johnson took over back in 2016 and their third-best away record last season is a testament to this.
Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest could be a popular choice for promotion this time, with Sabri Lamouchi having started his reign bringing them to the top of the table. They had a string of inconsistent results in 2019, finishing ninth overall last season, but they seem to be making a push for a Premier League return.
Swansea City
Swansea City have made a great start to the campaign under new manager Steve Cooper and are close enough to the top of the table for it to be tantalisingly close. They seem confident of a Premier League return and will dedication it could become a reality.
West Bromwich Albion
West Brom were in the promotion fight last season and are currently at the top of the table with 22 points. They could well repeat what they achieved last season and be in with a chance of a promotion.
Preston North End
Preston are one of the potential underdogs of this competition and after an impressive start to the Championship, they could well affirm their status as this season’s surprise contenders.
Derby County
Derby County are no longer under Frank Lampard’s microscope and with Philip Cocu as their new manager, they will be striving to fill the gaps left by Harry Wilson and Mason Mount to secure a spot in the promotion play-offs.
Sheffield Wednesday
Sheffield Wednesday have made a promising start with three wins from their first six games and have reasonable odds to win the Championship.
