BP Canada offers tips on how to choose the best shingle colour for your home
Colour drenching is all the rage in interior decor and now the trend is extending outdoors. In fact, an increasing number of Canadians are opting for monochromatic colour schemes for their home’s exterior and choosing roofing to match.
This has led to a rise in popularity of more neutral, saturated shingle colours like copper, says leading roofing and building material company BP Canada.
“While black is still the most popular roofing choice, coppery brown tones are gaining traction in exterior home decor – from outdoor furniture to garden accessories – and so we’re seeing a movement towards consumers choosing these shades for their roofs as well,” said Nathalie Lambert, Marketing Director of BP Canada, which produces all of its shingles in Canada.
Colour drenching is a design technique that involves painting a space in a single colour or a closely related range of tones. This creates a monochromatic look that feels inviting and luxurious, Lambert said, emphasizing that while this is a growing trend, multi-coloured exteriors are still preferred by many homeowners.
Copper brown roofs also build on the ever popular back-to-nature trend, exuding a natural look that blends in well with tree-lined or rustic environments, she explained. What’s more, they complement a variety of architectural styles and have an organic vibe that stands the test of time.
“Copper, tan and orange-toned hues have become increasingly popular in the world of interior design, so it’s no surprise that it’s now being incorporated on home exteriors as well,” Lambert said. “Homeowners like the warm, inviting look it emanates and when it comes to roofing, it certainly adds visual interest and complements a wide range of home styles.”
In addition to copper brown, Lambert said sales of multi-toned grey and green shingles – both often incorporating copper highlights – are also up.
To meet growing consumer demand for roofs that exude “umph,” BP Canada’s Chroma® Colour Lab recently introduced a line of colour-infused, multi-toned shingles, called Signature. An industry first, the shingles can be merged together — following BP Canada’s carefully-curated designs — by alternating two colours over successive rows to create a third hue that produces a complementary or contrasting visual effect.
BP Canada’s shingles predicted to gain most popularity in 2025 are Signature Mesquite and Toscana (both available in Eastern Canada) copper browns, as well as Signature Dublin (available in Eastern Canada) and Edinburgh (available in Western Canada), which feature a mix of copper/tan and grey hues.
Selecting the best roof colours for your home
With BP Canada dealers reporting that choosing shingle colours is the No. 1 challenge consumers face when buying a new roof, Lambert offers these tips to get started:
What’s your style? Identify the look you want for your house. Do you prefer more modern or rustic? Grey or blue tones deliver a more urban, contemporary feel, while copper, browns and greens work best to deliver a nature-infused vibe. If you’re not ready to take the colour plunge, black – such as BP Canada’s Cumin (available in Eastern Canada) and Kanji (available in Western Canada) Signature shingles, the blackest black on the market – as well as nuanced grey are safe choices for a classic, timeless look.
Colour combos: A roof makes up one third of a home’s exterior, so the colour you choose will make a difference. Decide if you want a monochromatic effect for your exterior or if you prefer a roof hue that contrasts with the rest of your home’s features. If your facade has beige, cream, and brown tones, for example, a copper roof will provide a designer look that goes a long way in maximizing curb appeal.
Personal taste: Regardless of trends, a roof is a major purchase that will last for years, so choose a colour you love. Start by searching through home decor and roofing websites – such as BP Canada, which has an inspiration section to help narrow down your choice – or browse through magazines and then walk around your neighborhood to identify roofing colours you like best. Create a board of ideas highlighting your top picks to help with your selection.
Try before buying: Given that your roofing choice is a decision that will last for years, it’s a good idea to ‘try before you buy’ with online tools – such as BP Canada’s free Visualizer – that allow you to virtually view different roofing options on your house. Always ask your dealer or roofer for an actual sample to confirm your choice.
