The Internet is amazing, isn’t it? One second, you’re looking up the latest Star Wars trailer, and the next you’re looking up beard grooming techniques. There is also the joke about wanting to go to bed at 10 at night, and then finding yourself at 2AM looking at Wikipedia articles and you can find out more about the latest electronics too thanks to the power of the internet.

Thanks to the Internet, people can connect anywhere and discuss anything. Okay, that’s enough praising the Internet. The problem with the Internet is that too many people use it too much, and don’t know how to use it properly. The occasional browsing on the Internet and wasting time on it isn’t a bad thing, but too many people stop being productive thanks to its addictive properties.

If you ever considered limiting your Internet use or cutting off some parts entirely, such as taking a complete social media blackout, there are a few reasons as to why this might not be a bad idea. Here are just a few reasons why.

The Internet is full of drama. FOMO, or fear of missing out, is a phenomenon that has been taking effect thanks to social media. You’re at work, and your friends are getting married, going to Europe, or partying every day. Seeing your friends have fun can inspire you and make you want to plan, but the problem comes when the FOMO is just plain depressing. If you find yourself depressed over your friends having fun, perhaps take a break and find your own fun.

It’s Keeping You Up

We mentioned the joke about spending hours on the Internet when you should be in bed, but this is a phenomenon. Plenty of people stay up on their phones or computers and then wonder why they can’t sleep. A good night’s rest is good for your mental health, and if you find yourself unable to sleep, perhaps cutting your Internet use can help. At least, before you go to bed. Having good sleep hygeine is important for a good night’s sleep, and one of the most popular rules is to get off the Internet and instead relax with a bath or a book.

Be More Productive

By productive, we aren’t just talking about your job. We’re talking about finding a hobby you like, making an effort to grow your brand, or doing something else that helps you grow as a person. Sometimes, productivity comes to a halt with heavy Internet use, and by being able to realize this, you can be able to be more productive.
