DHT: What It Is, Why It Affects Hair Loss, and How to Stop It

Sailun Tires

You’re not imagining things. Your hair is getting thinner. You can worry and let stress make it even worse, or you can get to the root cause of your hair loss.

The reason both men and women suffer from hair loss is due to sex hormones. One in particular, DHT (dihydrotestosterone), an androgen, is responsible for hair loss that comes on earlier in life, and faster too.

How Does It Make You Go Bald?

While DHT is a derivative of testosterone, it’s something that is also found in women. Men tend to have more significant amounts though. Once your testosterone converts to DHT through 5-AR, an enzyme, it starts flowing in your blood and then connects to receptors on your hair follicles.

You can guess what happens next. The follicles shrink and are less viable for supporting new, healthy hair growth. This leaves your once-full head of hair looking more sparse. Over time, it becomes more brittle. You may even lose your hair completely if you don’t find a way to target DHT’s effects on your hair.

For both men and women, high levels of DHT as well as other androgens, can make those hair follicles shrink or have a shorter growth cycle. So hair comes out thinner and even worse, it falls out faster. Some people are more prone to this than others because of the AR gene.

When there are variations in this gene, you may have increased androgen reception in those scalp follicles. That sets you up for hair loss that will usually come on slowly. You might not notice it until it’s too late.

How to Stop Hair Loss Caused by DHT

If you’ve noticed your hair is thinning and not looking as full as it once did, you should make sure to have a checkup with your doctor to rule out any serious underlying conditions. Sometimes, thyroid troubles can also lead to hair loss. So can extreme stress.

When DHT is the cause of hair loss, you need targeted treatments that will slow the onset of both male and female pattern baldness. They work by directly targeting DHT.

One company at the forefront of addressing the problems caused by DHT is Hair Restoration Laboratories.  It has a team of scientists, chemists and researchers that have formulated a DHT blocking line of shampoos, conditioners and serums that work to block DHT so that it won’t attach to your hair follicles. In doing so, hair loss and thinning can be prevented and you’ll have fuller, healthier hair and regain your confidence in your appearance.

Hair loss can change how you feel in everything you do. It can make you feel anxious and depressed which further makes it difficult to keep hair from falling out. By getting to the root cause with how DHT affects your hair, you’ll be able to turn things around and feel good about the way you look.
