Your skin is the largest organ in your body. It protects your body from bacterial infection, water, hazardous substances, and physical injury. In most situations, it is very effective.

Of course, your skin faces a huge number of challenges daily, and to ensure it performs properly you need to take care of your skin. This can be a particular issue for anyone with oily skin.

Oily skin is a natural occurrence. It is the result of excess sebum production. Sebum is produced in hair follicles and helps to protect the hair and the skin from attack. However, too much sebum will make your skin look oily. The sebum is also likely to block your pores. This reduces the breathability of your pores and encourages bacteria build-up on your skin which causes spots to appear.

Fortunately, by choosing natural skincare products you can reduce the appearance of oily skin and ensure you look and feel great. You should note that you don’t need to eliminate all the oil, it serves a useful purpose. But, you do need to reduce excess oil and the shine it gives your skin.

1. Cleanse Daily

Cleansing removes any products and debris on your skin. A good cleanser will also help to ensure your skin has the right pH level and is hydrated.

A key part of the cleansing process is to use a cleanser that also exfoliates. When you have oily skin you are at greater risk of the oil and pollutants blocking your pores, exfoliating will remove these contaminants and keep your skin looking great.

Don’t forget, once you have cleansed it’s a good idea to add some toner, this can be viewed as a base coat, protecting your skin while preparing it for the next step.

2. Choose Your Product Carefully

There are plenty of products on the market that are specifically designed for oily skin. However, these can sometimes be too harsh as they will remove all the sebum they can find. While you want to remove excess sebum, taking too much will leave your skin looking and feeling dry.

At the same time, the lack of oil on your skin will make your body create a lot more, increasing the look of oiliness.

3. Moisturize

As part of your daily routine, you still need to moisturize your skin. Oil is a protective layer but having oily skin doesn’t automatically mean it is well hydrated.

It’s important to keep your skin hydrated as this ensures the cells are healthy and that they have plenty of elasticity.

However, choose your product carefully. Thick moisturizers are likely to boost your shine and your skin won’t like it. You need to skip any with plant butters and choose a light moisturizer.

4. Use Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid that has been shown to help break down excess oil. At the same time, it will enter pores and clean them out, making this compound a cleaner and an oil reducer.

Simply run your salicylic acid product over your skin after cleansing before you start applying products.
